FOX Kills O.J. Simpson Special If O.J. Simpson wants to tell the world how he would have killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, he's going to have to find a new venue.Less than a week after announcing plans for a two-night semi-confessional special dubbed "If I Did It, Here's How It Happened," FOX has pulled the sweeps event, bowing to intense public and media pressure."This is an interview that no one thought would ever happen," said FOX's reality programming guru Mike Darnell in the announcement statement just last Tuesday. Two FOX station owners -- Lin Broadcasting and Pappas Broadcasting -- had already announced that they wouldn't air the Simpson special. Those two groups comprised only nine of the more than 200 FOX affiliates nationwide, but parent company News Corp opted to cut bait before any more affiliates could join in.In the special, which was already filmed and has been extensively promoed, Simpson will sat down with publisher Judith Regan and told "for the first time how he would have committed the murders if he were the one responsible for the crimes."Slated to air on Monday, Nov. 27 and Wednesday, Nov. 29, the special was supposed to be tied to the Nov. 30 release of ReganBooks' Simpson tome "If I Did It." On second thought, though, News Corp-owned publisher HarperCollins has decided not to distribute the book either."I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project," says News Corp Overlord Rupert Murdoch. "We are sorry for any pain this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown-Simpson."In 1995, Simpson was acquitted of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. He was later found responsible for both murders in a civil suit and was ordered to pay $33.5 million in restitution to the families of the victims, a penalty that remains outstanding. In addition to the defection of the Pappas and Lin, a new website dubbedDontPayOJ.com collected more than 47,000 signatures expressing disgust. In addition the site provides contact numbers for FOX and Regan books, urging, "Contact ReganBooks/HarperCollins, the publisher of this terrible book, and FOX, the parent company of the publisher as well as owner of the network giving the killer hours and hours of free air time to try and sell his book, and let them know how you feel about their decision to make murder profitable."Those voices appear to have been heard. FOX will air a "House" repeat on the Monday night and a second episode of "Bones" on the Wednesday. The Simpson special debacle is just the latest embarrassment in a fall that has seen FOX pull the plug on most of its new programs (only "'Til Death" and "Standoff" remain in production) and suffer through the lowest rated World Series in history.
